What is Abdominoplasty (Tummy Tuck) and How is it Performed?

Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is a surgical procedure aimed at reducing excess fat and skin in the abdominal area, often resulting from pregnancy or significant weight gain. This procedure also tightens the abdominal wall muscles that may have loosened over time. Although there are several variations of this surgery, the fundamental principles remain the same.

The procedure is performed under general anesthesia. A horizontal incision is made on the lower abdomen, typically positioned so that it can be concealed within the underwear line. Through this incision, the surgeon accesses the abdominal wall, where the loose muscles are tightened, often with vertical or horizontal sutures. This helps to correct any abdominal wall sagging. If necessary, fat in the flanks (love handles) is also reduced. After removing the excess skin and fat, a new navel may be created, and the incision is closed with the appropriate tension.

In some cases, a mini-abdominoplasty can be performed, where the tightening is achieved without repositioning the navel. This method is particularly beneficial for women with stretch marks resulting from pregnancy, as it can help to remove these marks. Additionally, any hernias around the navel can be easily repaired during this procedure.

Post-surgery, wearing a compression garment for about 4-6 weeks is recommended to help the new shape take form more quickly. The compression garment also reduces pain caused by movements in the first few days after the surgery. Sometimes, a drain may be placed to remove any fluids that accumulate in the surgical area; these are usually removed within a day or two, after which pain relief medication is often no longer necessary.

Achieving satisfactory results from this surgery, especially in cases where there is also excess weight, can be enhanced by combining abdominoplasty with liposuction. The combination of these two surgeries can significantly improve the patient’s quality of life and health parameters.
