Abdominoplasty in Chesterfield by John H. Hulsen, III, MD
Abdominoplasty St. Louis: Tummy Tuck Surgery
Many individuals feel self-conscious about extra fullness and skin in their lower belly area. Abdominoplasty, commonly known as a tummy tuck, is an effective solution for reshaping and tightening the abdomen. This procedure can address abdominal laxity after pregnancy by repairing and repositioning muscles. It also has the potential to remove most, if not all, lower torso stretch marks, resulting in a smoother, narrower figure and improved abdominal strength. Some patients even report improvements in lower back pain and urinary issues following abdominoplasty.
Tummy Tuck Consultation
During a tummy tuck consultation at John H. Hulsen, III, MD's office, patients undergo a comprehensive assessment of their entire trunk and buttock region. Areas of concern are evaluated for fullness and laxity, and checked for underlying hernias. The surgeon discusses additional areas that may benefit from liposuction to achieve a slimmer, more contoured appearance. Depending on individual needs, patients may require a mini-abdominoplasty, standard abdominoplasty, extended abdominoplasty, fleur-de-lis abdominoplasty, or even a circumferential body lift.

Preparing for Tummy Tuck Surgery
Abdominoplasty is a major surgical procedure. Patients should arrange for ample help at home for the first 1-2 weeks post-surgery to focus on recovery. Smoking and all forms of nicotine should be stopped at least 4 weeks prior to surgery, including e-cigarettes, patches, and gum. Medications and supplements that increase bleeding risk should be discontinued 2 weeks before surgery, as advised by the surgeon.
Abdominoplasty Technique
The surgeon marks areas for skin removal and concurrent liposuction (if desired) before the procedure. The incision is designed to be concealed within the bikini line. During the surgery, abdominal skin is elevated, muscles are repaired, and excess tissue is trimmed. Additional liposuction may be performed for enhanced contouring, and the belly button is redesigned in the appropriate location.
Recovery from Abdominoplasty
Patients are encouraged to take short, frequent walks around the house starting the night of surgery. Showering may be possible 48 hours post-procedure, but a compression garment should be worn day and night for 6-8 weeks. Initial tightness and mild muscle spasms are normal and will resolve over time. Bruising in liposuction areas typically subsides within 1-3 weeks. Surgical drains may remain in place for 1-3 weeks. Lifting is restricted to 5-10 pounds for the first 3 weeks, then gradually increased. Most patients return to normal activities and exercises after 6 weeks.
