Tummy Tuck in Duluth by Thomas J. Rishavy, MD
Tummy Tuck Surgery
What is a Tummy Tuck?
A tummy tuck, also known as abdominoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure designed to improve the appearance of the torso and tighten abdominal muscles. It's not a substitute for weight loss or exercise, but can help achieve a flatter, more toned abdomen when these methods aren't enough.
Ideal Candidates
Good candidates for tummy tuck surgery are typically:
- Physically healthy and at a stable weight
- Have realistic expectations
- Non-smokers
- Bothered by the appearance of their abdomen
Dr. Rishavy recommends waiting until after childbearing is complete before considering a tummy tuck, as future pregnancies may affect results.
The Tummy Tuck Procedure
The tummy tuck procedure can be performed as outpatient or with an overnight hospital stay. During surgery, Dr. Rishavy makes an incision in the lower abdomen, separates skin from underlying muscles, tightens the abdominal wall, removes excess skin, and closes incisions.
Recovery
Patients can expect some discomfort and swelling post-surgery. Pain medication will be prescribed to manage discomfort. A compression garment should be worn for several weeks to minimize swelling and support the healing abdomen.
Tummy Tuck vs. Panniculectomy
While both procedures involve removing excess abdominal skin, a tummy tuck also includes muscle tightening and is considered cosmetic. A panniculectomy focuses on removing hanging skin and fat, and may be medically necessary in some cases.
