Understanding Brachioplasty Surgery

Brachioplasty, commonly known as an arm lift, is a surgical procedure designed to remove loose, hanging skin on the underside of the upper arm. This treatment is particularly beneficial for patients experiencing skin laxity due to aging, significant weight loss, or weight fluctuations.

Ideal Candidates for Arm Lift Surgery

Candidates for brachioplasty typically demonstrate the following characteristics:

  • Excessive hanging skin and/or fat resistant to diet and exercise
  • Stable body weight
  • Non-smokers
  • Overall good health with no major medical complications
  • Realistic expectations about surgical outcomes

Surgical Procedure Details

The brachioplasty procedure involves making an incision along the inside of the upper arm, extending from the underarm to the elbow. Depending on the patient's specific needs, excess fat is removed through direct excision or liposuction. The underlying supportive tissue is then tightened using internal absorbable sutures.

Surgical Techniques

Two primary approaches are available:

  • Standard Brachioplasty: Comprehensive skin and fat removal
  • Minimal-Incision Arm Lift: Less invasive option for patients requiring minor corrections

Recovery and Expectations

Following brachioplasty, patients can expect temporary swelling and bruising. Drainage tubes might be placed at the incision site for the first few days. Compression bandages are typically used to support proper healing. Initial results are visible immediately, with full aesthetic outcomes becoming apparent after approximately two weeks.

Potential Risks and Considerations

As with any surgical procedure, brachioplasty carries potential risks, including:

  • Temporary or permanent loss of sensation
  • Potential for persistent swelling
  • Risk of nerve or blood vessel damage
  • Potential fluid accumulation
  • Visible surgical scarring

Dr. Weinstein and his staff are incredible. He is an amazing doctor with so much knowledge and experience. He is also very caring, he literally led me to the car the day after my surgery and helped me get in. I have had so many surgeries and accidents and have numerous experience with doctors, and I love when they show that they care about their patients. I highly recommend them!

Dr. Weinstein saved my face after a serious fall on ice. He was on his way to a party when I got there, but he stayed to stitch me up, which took hours. I can never thank him enough. He even sent me to a orthodontist to Xray my jaw before he performed a miracle on my face. Today, you could never tell where the stitches were. He is also a hand surgeon and has attended to problems I’ve had with mine.
