WHAT IS BLEPHAROPLASTY?

Plastic surgery on the eyelid is called 'Blepharoplasty' in the
medical literature. Eyelids have a special importance as they are the
thinnest skin structure of the body, protect very sensitive
structures, move constantly and are easily affected by
environmental-genetic factors. The signs of aging begin in the 30s
with the formation of wrinkles and eye bags around the eyes. With the
effect of time, the tension of the eyelids decreases, sagging and
bagging occur with the pressure of the fat tissues in their deep
parts. Eyelid surgeries can be performed not only for aesthetic
reasons, but also for congenital or acquired eyelid drooping or skin
tumors on the eyelids. In addition to the reasons mentioned above, as
it increases the decreased visual fields, enables the eyes to open
more easily, and as a result facilitates many important daily
activities such as reading a book.

BLEPHAROPLASTY METHODS

As we age, skin tension decreases, gets loose and lengthens, the
muscles under the skin weaken, and especially with the effect of sun
rays on the skin, spots called pigmentation occur. Since the skin
around our eyes is thinner and more sensitive than other parts of the
body, the effects of aging are primarily observed around the eyes.
Different surgical interventions can be performed on the lower and
upper eyelids to correct these problems observed in both the upper and
lower eyelids.

UPPER EYELID AESTHETICS – UPPER BLEPHAROPLASTY

The most common problem observed in the upper eyelids as age
progresses is excess skin. The thinning, elongation and sagging of the
skin primarily cause a tired and sad expression, while the progression
of the problem over time can negatively affect vision. In the upper
eyelid aesthetic surgery, besides the excess skin on the eyelid, a
small amount of subcutaneous muscle and/or adipose tissue can be
removed when necessary. Both the signs of aging as well as visual
issues brought on by the hooded effect of the extra skin can be fixed.

LOWER EYELID AESTHETICS – LOWER BLEPHAROPLASTY

Loosening and sagging of the skin and subcutaneous tissues under the
eyes cause wrinkles in this area and eye bags over time. In lower
eyelid aesthetic surgery, excess skin in this area is removed, while
excess fat tissues in the bagging areas are partially removed or
spread towards areas with fat tissue loss. It is also possible to
correct the laxity of the lower eyelid during this surgery, which

different appearance to the eye by changing the location of the
external angle of the eye. In some patients, only upper or lower
eyelid surgery is planned, while in a significant part of the
patients, both the upper and lower eyelids are intervened, at the same

BEFORE BLEPHAROPLASTY OPERATION

With eyelid aesthetics, sagging upper eyelids can be lifted, puffy
bags above and below the eye can be removed, so that a rejuvenated,
vigorous appearance can be achieved around the eye. Patients receive a
sharper, more striking gaze after this procedure. Eyelid aesthetic
procedures are used to treat patients' common complaints of looking
tired, irritated, or sleepy.

Even though eyelid cosmetic surgery is a relatively straightforward
process compared to other aesthetic surgeries, preoperative tests
thoroughly investigate your overall health state, wound healing
abilities, and eye health in case of any eye complaints (eye pressure,
dry eye, lenses and glasses). Consultation with an ophthalmologist is
unquestionably necessary. All drugs you take, notably blood thinners.
All previous procedures must be disclosed to your doctor before the
procedure. General anesthesia is occasionally used during eyelid
aesthetic surgery, which can also be carried out under local
anesthetic.

 

AFTER BLEPHAROPLASTY OPERATION

After eyelid surgery, cream is used on the eyelids. It is usually not
necessary to close the eyes. It is important to apply a cold compress
on the eyelid for 10-15 minutes every hour on the first day in order
to avoid edema, swelling and bleeding. On the second day, 10-15
minutes of cold compresses every 2-3 hours is sufficient. After 48
hours, it will be good to apply a warm compress to speed up the
healing. If there is pain, you can use a pain reliever recommended by
your doctor. A slight discomfort after surgery is normal, but soon it
will disappear. If the pain is severe and experience blurred vision,
see your doctor quickly. Edema and bruising may occur on the eyelids
in the first few days. Redness and bleeding may occur in the sclera
part, also called the white of the eye.

Full recovery may take several weeks. During this period, it would be
appropriate not to wear make-up. You can continue to use contact
lenses when the edema on the eyelids resolves. You can use your
glasses carefully right after the surgery. The sutures placed in the
surgery will usually dissolve on their own within 4-7 days. If
non-dissolving stitches are used, they will need to be removed after a
week or two. Removal of stitches is done in the clinic environment.
Many people who have eyelid aesthetic surgery are satisfied with the
result and their personal image. People whose visual field is narrowed
due to eyelid drooping are relieved in terms of vision.

A temporary complication of eyelid surgery is the inability to close
your eyes completely. This means dry eyes will occur. However, this
will usually improve within a few weeks or months. It would be
appropriate to use tear drops and gels to moisten the eyes during this
time. It may also be necessary to cover the eyes with gel before going
to bed at night. After removing the stitches on the eyelids, gently
massaging is important to facilitate the closing of the eyes. If the
inability to close the eyelids persists, a second procedure may be
required. Other complications of blepharoplasty surgery are, however,
very rare:
